Astrology Series: Aquarius the Water-bearer.
Follow along the Astrology series, where I, Imogen Rolfe, embark on a journey of turning myself into each of the zodiac signs with full costume, hair and make-up made and designed in the studio.
Within Astrology, there lie thousands of years of history, science, myth and legend. By undertaking this project I am endeavouring to learn more about the evolution of Astrology.
Dating back to Babylon, Hermes Trismegistus and Ancient Egypt, the study of the planets has influenced the world we live in today.
Whether you like it or hate it, live by it or think it’s nonsense, the study of the stars (and at least reading the stories of each zodiac sign) has the ability to offer guidance, teachings and predictions when science is yet to prove its point.
Everyone's best friend - water-bearing Aquarius - is simply one of a kind.
This air sign is often two steps ahead of the game with innovative and non-conformist ideas. They look at things as a big picture and don’t bother to sweat the small stuff.
Often perceived as cold at times, Aquarians are independent, creative thinkers who thrive by having their own space. Give them this and they’ll respect you for doing so.
An Aquarian is aroused by mental stimulation and authenticity, and will not accept superficial behaviour. The more spontaneity the better.
The previous astrology post explained how there were three types of Capricorn. To illustrate this further let me introduce the correct term for this - decan.
Put simply, a decan is the three approximate ten-degree divisions of a zodiac sign. These three divisions are influenced by the other signs of the same element (either fire, earth, water or air) and the corresponding ruling planet.
The three decans of Aquarius
The Innovator (January 20-29)
The typical Aquarian, ruled by their home planet, Uranus. They are trailblazers who endeavour to do things differently by setting trends and lending a helping hand in an effort to better humanity. They can feel restricted and fall into depression if they find their independence is limited or taken away, so they must simply be as free as is allowed.
The Communicator (January 30-February 8)
Sub-ruled by Mercury, these Aquarians have many qualities of a Gemini – they are inquisitive and love to talk about and share the knowledge they receive. They are sharp, witty and dynamic. They always keep others on their toes as these listeners eagerly await where the story will transport them too. This makes them excellent salespeople, storytellers and presenters.
The Harmonious (February 9-18)
These Aquarians give off strong Libran energy as they are sub-ruled by Venus, the planet of love, beauty and balance. While the other decans may prefer to stand out, these peacemakers would rather fit in. They gravitate towards trends already set and like to incorporate beauty and sensual aspects into life. All Aquarians love science and logic and are wildly enchanted by ideas. The third decan can be seduced by even the most outlandish conspiracy and will find a way of making truth of it if they see it serves a purpose.
Aquarius in Myth
Many myths and legends from Ancient civilisations were made of the twelve zodiac signs. These myths were often associated with the gods and goddesses that were worshipped at the time.
For Babylonians, Aquarius was named Gula, translating to ‘the Great one’. As the Sun passed through the constellation of Aquarius it brought the annual rainfall to the land, which is how the god(dess) became known as the irrigator, by pouring water from an urn over the land. The earliest depiction of Gula was as a female form, also representing fertility.
In Ancient Greece, the story of Aquarius is based on Zeus. The god of all Gods was fed up with mankind, as there was growing disharmony on earth. So then, he poured all the waters from heaven down over Earth creating the Deucalion Deluge - a huge flood that wiped out civilisation.
There were just two survivors, Deucalion, son of Prometheus and creator of mankind and Pyrrha, daughter of Pandora.
A final note…
Did you know that the age of Aquarius is officially upon us? You may have felt the shift of energy from 2020-2021.
A favouring for technology, isolating, saying NO more easily and looking at things from the big picture. We’ve all had to be a lot more creative in our lives as we adjust to this new world.
Progressive thought has taken the forefront. Advancements in our societal structures, to correct injustices, are being set in motion.
Can you feel it?
